The prevalence of kidneydisease is rising, in spite of advances in diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic strategies. This has kindledinterest in the discipline. Once considered a subspecialtyof general medicine, nephrology has evolved into a broaddiscipline. This encompasses diverse fields like transplantmedicine, dialysis medicine, onconephrology, interventional nephrology, and immunonephrology.Notably, most causes, clinical manifestations, complications, comorbidities, and therapeutic targets inkidney disease are metabolic in nature. This underscoresthe need to recognize Metabolic Nephrology as a distinctand emerging subspecialty. This allows holistic addressalof the metabolic origins and consequences of kidneydisease. It will also foster the development of preventive, pharmacologic, etiology-specific and replacementtherapies.
